Two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a virus linked to rising respiratory illnesses in China, have been reported in Bengaluru. According to News 18, an eight-month-old child tested positive for HMPV, while India Today confirmed two cases were identified at a hospital in Bengaluru.

The cases were detected at Baptist Hospital in North Bengaluru. Notably, the patients had no history of international travel. The Karnataka Health Department confirmed the test results, stating that the infected child is receiving treatment at a private hospital and is in stable condition.

The Union Health Ministry also confirmed these reports. Officials said, “The cases were identified in a private hospital, and we have no reason to doubt their test results. However, we currently lack data on whether this strain is the same as the one detected in China.”

About Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus similar to COVID-19, affecting people of all ages, especially young children, older adults, and those with weak immune systems.

Symptoms usually appear within 3 to 10 days of infection and include:

  • Cough
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Sore throat
  • Breathing difficulties

In severe cases, it may lead to pneumonia or bronchitis.

K Padmavathi, Andhra Pradesh’s Public Health Director, stated that children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses are at higher risk of severe complications.

Although reports of an HMPV outbreak in China have caused global concern, India’s Health Ministry reassured that the situation is typical of the flu season. Officials said the surge is likely due to influenza, RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), and HMPV, which are common seasonal viruses.

Government Response and Precautions

The Indian government is closely monitoring the situation. The Ministry of Health has requested timely updates from the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding China’s outbreak.

Advisories Issued:

  • Delhi authorities issued guidelines to prepare for HMPV and other respiratory illnesses. Hospitals have been instructed to ensure supplies of essential medicines like paracetamol, antihistamines, bronchodilators, and cough syrups. Oxygen supplies for severe cases have also been mandated.
  • Kerala Health Minister Veena George advised elderly individuals and pregnant women to wear masks as a precaution. She emphasized that there is no need for panic and urged children with symptoms to stay home.
  • Telangana authorities listed dos and don’ts to control infection spread. So far, no HMPV cases have been reported in the state.
  • Andhra Pradesh officials recommended handwashing with soap for at least 20 seconds and covering the nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing.

Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV. Patients, especially children and elderly individuals, will be treated in government hospitals as needed.

Future Monitoring

The Ministry of Health has announced plans to increase the number of laboratories capable of testing for HMPV. Additionally, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will track HMPV trends throughout the year to ensure preparedness.

While the situation remains under control, authorities continue to advise strict hygiene practices and precautions to reduce the risk of infection.
