The Amateur is an upcoming American espionage thriller film directed by James Hawes and written by Gary Spinelli. Based on Robert Littell’s 1981 novel of the same name, which was previously adapted into a film that same year, it is produced by Dan Wilson and Hutch Parker for 20th Century Studios. The film stars Rami Malek, Rachel Brosnahan, CaitrÃona Balfe, Adrian Martinez, Laurence Fishburne, Holt McCallany, and Julianne Nicholson.
The Amateur Release Date
Development of a new adaptation of Robert Littell’s novel was first announced in November 2006, with Hugh Jackman attached to star and Evan Katz writing the screenplay. In February 2023, Hutch Parker and Dan Wilson were announced as producers for 20th Century Studios, with James Hawes directing and Rami Malek in the lead role, also serving as an executive producer. By May, the cast expanded to include Rachel Brosnahan, Caitriona Balfe, Adrian Martinez, Laurence Fishburne, Holt McCallany, and Julianne Nicholson.
Principal photography began in London in June 2023, with additional locations in south-east England, France, and Turkey. Filming was suspended in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike but resumed by December 2023.
The film is scheduled to be released on April 11, 2025, after previously being slated for release on November 8, 2024.

The Amateur Plot
After Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer, loses his wife in a terrorist attack in London, he discovers that his superiors are unwilling to act due to conflicting internal priorities. Determined to seek justice, he blackmails the agency into training him and allowing him to pursue the terrorists on his own.
