In the coming days, a significant transformation in internet services is expected in the country. This change will redefine both the availability and experience of internet users. The central government is gearing up to launch satellite internet services soon. The government is likely to roll out this service in June this year. The telecom regulator is working on building a strong foundation for this service, which will be capable of providing internet access from villages to oceans.
Government’s Preparation for Satellite Internet
According to sources, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is in the final stages of preparing a set of recommendations on the pricing and usage of satellite communication. This framework has been under development for the past two years. Once finalized, the spectrum will be allocated accordingly.
Major players such as Reliance Jio Infocomm, Bharti Airtel, and Starlink are actively preparing to launch satellite internet services in India. Sources also suggest that TRAI is soon expected to introduce a regulatory framework for satellite communication services. This framework will cover crucial aspects such as spectrum allocation, pricing, and revenue-sharing models.
TRAI aims to ensure that these regulations get swift approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to avoid any legal disputes. TRAI is likely to submit its recommendations by March. After a short consultation period, these will be implemented by the Digital Communication Commission without major changes. Following this, the spectrum auction process will begin, which could take two to three months. By June, satellite internet operators may start their commercial services and begin generating revenue.

How Satellite Internet Works
Satellite internet is a wireless internet service that is far superior to traditional broadband. The key advantage is that it provides internet connectivity in remote areas where cable or mobile towers are unavailable. It functions by utilizing satellites in space, which are connected to receivers on Earth. These receivers then transfer internet data to devices such as mobile phones and laptops.
Impact of Satellite Internet in India
Between 2020 and 2022, the Indian government liberalized the space sector, allowing private companies to access satellite spectrum and infrastructure. The launch of satellite internet services will enable high-speed internet in rural and remote areas. This technology will be especially beneficial in regions where setting up fiber-optic networks is difficult.
Once introduced in India, satellite internet will boost education, business, healthcare, and digital services. While many countries around the world already use satellite internet, it is generally more expensive than broadband due to its high infrastructure and operational costs.
