Ponniyin Selvan: 1 is a historical drama based on the book of the same name by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The film has an ensemble cast including Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Prabhu and Prakash Raj. The South Indian movie will release simultaneously in five languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam.

The film is a dream project of veteran director Mani Ratnam. The screenplay of the film is co-written by Mani Ratnam and Elango Kumaravel. Veteran Bollywood musician AR Rahman is serving as the music director in the film. It is produced under the banner of Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions.
