Paris Olympics 2024: Vinesh Phogat Will Not Get Any Olympic Medal, Disqualified Due To Overweight

The Indian Olympic Association said, “It is regrettable that the Indian contingent shares the news of Vinesh Phogat being disqualified from the women’s wrestling 50kg category. Despite the best efforts made by the team overnight, she weighed a few grams more than 50kg this morning. There will be no further comment by the contingent at this time. The Indian contingent requests you to respect Vinesh’s privacy. She would like to focus on the upcoming competitions.”

Till 12 noon on August 7, India and Indian fans were elated that today India will get another Olympic medal and its color will be at least silver. However, now this is not going to happen. So far, India has won 3 medals in the Paris Olympics and on Tuesday night, 6 August, she had confirmed the medal by reaching the final, but a few hours before the final, her weight was found to be more than 50 kg.

It is worth noting that in the women’s freestyle 50kg weight category, Vinesh Phogat defeated the Japanese player in the pre-quarterfinals, who is the current number one wrestling player and won the gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics. Vinesh Phogat created history by defeating Japan’s Yui Susaki 3-2, as she had not lost any wrestling match for a long time.

After this, Vinesh reached the semi-finals by defeating Oksana Livach of Ukraine 7-5 in the quarter-finals. She entered the final by defeating Cuba’s Yusnelis Guzman 5-0 in the semi-finals. These matches were played within 24 hours and the final was to be played on August 7 (12:30 pm), but now it will not be held.

For your information, Vinesh Phogat has been playing in the 53 kg category for a long time. She also played in the 53 kg weight category in the Tokyo Olympics 2021, but she qualified for the 50 kg weight category for the Paris Olympics. She lost to her junior in the 53 kg weight category and she did not even play the World Championship, so she did not get a place in that category.
