IPL ‘Uncapped’ Rule: Is It Just a Scheme to Help MS Dhoni? Ex-India Star Drops a Bombshell!

Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has fully backed the IPL governing body’s decision to classify MS Dhoni as an ‘uncapped’ player for the upcoming season. Under the new retention rules, any player who hasn’t represented India in the past five years will be deemed ‘uncapped’ and can be retained at a significantly lower price. This change is advantageous for Chennai Super Kings, who are expected to use this rule to keep former captain MS Dhoni. Karthik believes this rule was created “only for one man.”

“Everyone is talking about it. This rule was designed for one person, and I completely support it. He has been a significant part of what the IPL represents. If everyone involved—the BCCI, the teams, and the league—feels positive about it, that’s thanks to his contributions over the last 15-18 years,” Karthik told Cricbuzz.

He added, “Ask any TV broadcaster, and they’ll tell you that when he steps onto the field, the ratings soar. That’s a fact. If implementing this rule benefits the league, why not? While we shouldn’t bend the rules, if it’s a fair regulation and all teams agree, then let’s move forward with it. He is a remarkable cricketer.”

Although Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020, he last played for India in July 2019 during the ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, which India lost.

According to an IPL statement, “A capped Indian player will become uncapped if they have not played in the starting XI in International Cricket (Test match, ODI, Twenty20 International) in the last five calendar years preceding the season or do not hold a Central Contract with the BCCI. This rule applies only to Indian players.”
