Gehraiyaan Review: Things You Should Know Before Watching

You all must have heard Gehraiyaan’s title track somewhere or the other on the internet for like a million times now. Trust me, we’ve to, and we don’t complain.

The movie has gained a lot of hype with a star cast of Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Ananya Panday. Perhaps, it started since the trailer release made netizens go gaga over mere five words,” tu marz hai, Dawa bhi.” 

In Gehraiyaan, Shakun Batra has drawn a lot of inspiration from the water, reflections, and blue. On the surface, the characters’ lives appear picture-perfect, ongoing deeper, Batra discloses each character’s flaws. Almost every character in his film is a mystery. Indeed, Batra and his writers construct frames are the source of his storytelling magic.

The Plot of Gehraiyaan

Alisha (Deepika Padukone) and Tia (Ananya Panday) are cousins who grew up together, but as life occurs, they drift apart, and their stark reality now stands between them. The movie plot centers around a complicated love tale. An unhappy, hopeless Alisha, who is in a relationship with Karan (Dhairya Karwa), falls in love with her cousin Tia’s fiance, Zain (Siddhant Chaturvedi). 

Shakun Batra starts peeling back the layers of Alisha, Tia, and Zain’s characters in the gorgeous environment of the Arabian Sea, luxurious Mumbai flats, and beach-front property. Batra creates multiple unpleasant situations, and you can sense it in every picture. Alisha and Tia experience this sensation of uneasiness on more than one occasion.

Although the theme of adultery isn’t new to Hindi cinema, the way the issue is handled makes an impression. Despite being produced by Dharma Productions, a family-entertainers brand, this film provides a glimpse at the darker side of relationships. 

Deepika kisses Siddhant in such a manner that their private moments are portrayed as a part of the narrative rather than a tool to seduce. The intensity intensifies as the film progresses. The writer-director ups the tension in the plot twist and finale of Gehraiyaan, making for a fascinating tale.

The Performance 

Padukone captures your attention from the first scene in Gehraiyaan. It is safe to say that Deepika Padukone is the film’s spirit. Deepika shows off her acting chops in worrisome panic attacks and aggressive scenes. Her enthralling connection with Chaturvedi is also noteworthy. Siddhant Chaturvedi, on the other hand, is also a pleasant surprise. His portrayal of a self-centered fiancée has been laced with many themes. Subsequently unveiling his potential.

Talking about Ananya, aka Tia, a darling who has made genuine attempts. Tia’s performance will be remembered as the best of her career. 

Furthermore, rookie Dhairya creates a solid first impression by playing the oblivious spouse. Aside from these four, experienced actors Naseeruddin Shah and Rajat Kapoor have lent their backing to the drama with outstanding performances.

Verdict 

Overall there is a delicate balance of closeness, shock, sadness, and, most importantly, love. Is it genuinely worthwhile? Yes, indeed, for once.
