If you use online payment apps, this news is important for you. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is set to deactivate UPI IDs linked to mobile numbers that are inactive in bank records.
According to a report, NPCI has clarified that users whose mobile numbers have been inactive for a long time will have their UPI services disabled from April 1. This means such users will no longer be able to use online payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. To continue using UPI without any disruption, you should check and ensure that your mobile number is updated in your bank records.
Who Will Lose UPI Access?
As per reports, UPI services will be deactivated for users whose mobile numbers have been inactive for a long time. Additionally, if you have changed your mobile number but haven’t updated it with your bank, your UPI services may be discontinued. If your old number has been deactivated and you haven’t informed your bank, your UPI services will also be stopped.
How to Keep Your UPI Service Active
To ensure your UPI services remain active:
- Update your mobile number with your bank.
- If you have recently changed your mobile number, update it with your bank immediately.
- If your registered mobile number is inactive, reactivate it as soon as possible.

Why Has NPCI Taken This Step?
NPCI has implemented this measure to prevent fraud and cybercrime linked to deactivated mobile numbers. Often, people change their numbers but fail to update them with their bank. If their old number is reassigned to someone else, the new owner might accidentally or intentionally misuse the linked UPI account.
To prevent such risks, NPCI has directed banks and payment apps to remove long-inactive mobile numbers from their UPI systems. This step aims to enhance security and reduce fraud within the UPI ecosystem.
