When planning a journey, people prefer a mode of transport that gets them to their destination on time. Some choose to travel by car, while others opt for trains. However, there are many places where neither trains nor cars are suitable, making flights the best option to save time.
However, flight delays and cancellations are common, causing inconvenience to passengers. If you are travelling by flight or planning to book one, it is essential to understand the refund rules. Let’s find out whether you can get a refund if your flight is delayed or cancelled.
Why Are Flights Delayed or Cancelled?
Flight delays and cancellations can be frustrating for passengers. During winter, heavy fog is a major reason for delays and cancellations. This year, many flights have either been delayed or cancelled due to severe weather conditions.
When Are You Eligible for a Refund?
If you have booked a flight, knowing the refund rules can help in case of a delay or cancellation. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA):
- If a flight duration is up to 2.5 hours but is delayed by 2 hours, passengers are entitled to assistance.
- If a flight duration is between 2.5 to 5 hours and is delayed by 3 hours, the airline must offer refreshments.
- If a flight is delayed by 4 hours or more, airlines must provide meals and refreshments to passengers.
- If a flight is delayed by 6 hours or more, the airline must inform passengers at least 24 hours before departure about the delay. In such cases, passengers have two options:
- Rebook their seat on another flight.
- Claim a full refund of their ticket amount.

How to File a Complaint If You Don’t Receive a Refund?
Even though DGCA has clear refund policies, some airlines may delay or refuse refunds. In such cases, you can file a complaint online with DGCA.
