Here’s how the Indian Badminton Team created history in the Thomas Cup finals:
Lakshya Sen was represented in India in the first match of the game. He played singles against Anthony Ginting. Their match was a nerve-wracking encounter as it went till the 3rd set. Lakshya lost the first set badly and managed only 8 points against Ginting’s 21. However, he bounced back hard to win consecutive sets and secure a lead for India. In the 2nd set, he defeated Gintiing by 21-17 and in the 3rd set by 21-16. Lakshya’s win set the stage for an epic Indian victory.
The second game of the finale was a double in which Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty represented India against the Indonesian duo of Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo. Similar to the first match, the Indian pair was again put on the backfoot in the 1st set. They lost the 1st set but again registered consecutive victories in the 2nd and 3rd set to win the match. The stats after the game read- 18-21, 23-21, and 21-19.
Last but not least, the win that guaranteed India’s most significant victory in Badminton history was brought by Kidambi Srikanth. He defeated Jonatan Christie in straight sets to help India clinch the elusive title. He won by 21-15 and 23-21 against Christie to bring magnificent glory to India.
