No AC Campaign: Ola, Uber, Rapido Cab Drivers’ New Protest in Hyderabad; What’s the Reason?

Category-

Cab drivers in Hyderabad have found a new way to make their voices heard. After previously making headlines by boycotting rides to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, they have now decided to launch a No AC Campaign starting March 24 to protest against the high fares imposed by cab aggregators.

A post by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union on social media stated that cab drivers in Hyderabad would begin the No AC Campaign from March 24.

Why Are Drivers Protesting?

The main goal of this campaign is to pressure cab aggregators to implement a fair fare structure similar to the government-mandated prepaid taxi fares. The union believes that the new fare system should cover fuel costs, maintenance expenses, and fair compensation for drivers’ services.

The union had also launched a No AC Campaign in April 2024. At that time, they argued that drivers earn 10 to 12 rupees per kilometer, while the cost of running a cab with air conditioning is 16 to 18 rupees per kilometer, leading to significant losses.

Union’s Stand on the Protest

Speaking to Telangana Today, union president Sheikh Salauddin said that the union is presenting its case in the right way. He stated that they are fighting for their rights and that cab aggregators are unfairly determining fares. He added that they would continue their protest through different means, including the No AC Campaign.
