This Decades-Old Feature Might Return in Android 16, Release Date Revealed

Category-

Google launched Android 15 in August last year, and now the company is working on Android 16. While many mobile devices and tablets are still receiving the Android 15 update, details about Android 16’s features have started to emerge. Reports suggest that the user interface may not see major changes, but the update could bring several exciting new features.

A Decade-Old Feature Might Return

According to reports, Android 16 may bring back the option to add widgets on the lock screen. Google removed this feature nearly a decade ago, and if it returns, it will mark its comeback after ten years. The feature is already available for tablets, and now smartphones might also get it.

Live Updates Feature

Similar to Apple’s Live Activities, Google might introduce a “Live Updates” feature in Android 16. This feature will allow users to pin notifications for easy access and display their progress on the status bar and lock screen. However, it is still unclear whether this feature will work for all apps or only selected ones. In addition, considering the rising number of cybercrimes, Android 16 will focus heavily on cybersecurity.

Protection Against Motion Sickness

There are speculations that Android 16 may introduce a feature to help reduce motion sickness. The “Motion Cues” feature, similar to Apple’s Vehicle Motion Cues, will display black dots along the edges of the phone screen in the direction of movement. This visual cue could help reduce motion sickness while using the phone in moving vehicles.

Release Date

Google has set a deadline to release Android 16 by June. The company has stated that development is progressing at the expected pace for a June launch. The developer preview was released in November, and two beta versions have already been launched.
