India’s Only Railway Station That Requires a Visa for Entry- All You Need to Know

In India, citizens can travel freely without needing a passport or visa. However, there is one railway station that is an exception to this rule. At this unique station, Indian citizens must have both a passport and a valid visa to enter. Let’s explore the reason behind this unusual requirement.

Attari Railway Station, also known as Attari Sham Singh Railway Station, is located in Punjab’s Amritsar district near the India-Pakistan border. It serves as the last station on the Amritsar–Lahore rail route, providing connectivity to the Wagah Border. Due to its strategic location, special regulations apply to those who wish to enter the station.

A visa is mandatory for anyone who wants to board or disembark at Attari railway station. Without the necessary documentation, individuals are not allowed entry. Security forces remain on high alert around the clock, and anyone found at the station without the required visa could face arrest and legal action, including imprisonment.

Attari Railway Station gained prominence as the departure point for the Samjhauta Express, which connected India and Pakistan. However, the train service was discontinued in 2019 following India’s decision to revoke Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. Since then, the station continues to hold significance due to its geopolitical location.

Being situated near a highly sensitive international border, Attari station follows strict security measures. It serves as one of the key transit points between India and Pakistan, making it necessary for all visitors to carry a valid passport and visa before entering the premises.
