Earlier this year, Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line became fully driverless, joining the exclusive 7 percent of metro networks worldwide capable of autonomous train operations.

The advantages of driverless metro systems are numerous, including increased operational flexibility, reduced human intervention, and minimized human error. Consequently, driverless technology is expected to play a crucial role in the future of Delhi Metro.

Delhi Metro to Expand Driverless Operations: Phase 4 Lines to Feature Autonomous Technology by 2026

Currently, only the Magenta and Pink lines of Delhi Metro operate entirely without drivers. Looking ahead, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced that all new metro lines in the upcoming Phase 4 expansion will feature driverless technology.

Under Phase 4, three new corridors are under construction and are expected to be completed by 2026. According to DMRC, all these lines will be equipped with autonomous train operations.

For a metro line to transition to driverless operations, specific conditions must be met. According to DMRC, a line must be integrated with advanced signaling systems, and the rolling stock used must be compatible with driverless technology. The Magenta and Pink lines were suitable for driverless operations due to their advanced rolling stock, which supports automated functions.

Driverless technology is relatively new to the Delhi Metro. Like driverless cars, these systems must adhere to stringent safety protocols.

All trains on the Magenta and Pink lines operate using Unattended Train Operation (UTO) technology, with the Operations Control Centre (OCC) continuously monitoring the trains with professionals working around the clock. The OCC closely regulates and monitors all train movements to ensure safety and efficiency.

These driverless trains are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and are designed to be ‘fail-safe,’ meaning they automatically stop in case of any technical issues, ensuring passenger safety. The trains also use Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology, which ensures safe operations even during high-frequency or peak hours.

Moreover, skilled maintenance staff are stationed at depots and stations to provide immediate assistance if needed. They maintain real-time communication with the OCC to swiftly address any issues. Additionally, Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) are installed to prevent any contact between passengers and the tracks.

As mentioned earlier, driverless trains offer greater operational flexibility, reduce human intervention and errors, and increase the availability of coaches for service. By automating pre-induction checks, they lessen the workload on train operators. Additionally, parking on the stabling line in depots is automated, further streamlining operations.
